    There was once a snail called Bertie who was late for absolutely everything. He was late for breakfast. He was late for lunch. Once he was so late for his own birthday that everyone had gone home and the cake had been eaten by a very apologetic pigeon.

    "You must go faster," said the rabbit, who was never late for anything and never noticed anything either. "I could," said Bertie. "But then I would miss the bit where the light comes through the leaves. And that's my favourite bit." The rabbit did not know which bit he meant, because he had never once looked up.

    Three

    One morning the whole garden woke up to rain, and everybody rushed inside — everybody except Bertie, who was already halfway across the path and saw no reason to hurry now. So Bertie was the only one who saw the rainbow. All of it. From one end to the other. And when he finally got home, three hours late for tea, he had something to tell them about.
